Downloadable STL files for a beautiful 3D printed Liahona that you can print yourself. It has a hole inside for you to insert a 20mm button compass, which does not come with this purchase because this is a free download. It has two hinges, the first opens so you can see the compass better, the second opens a secret compartment below the compass where you can store the trinkets. There are files for 4 small trinkets, a mini Nephi, brass plates, sailing ship and bow and arrow. I recommend printing the bow and arrow in a flexible filament, so it doesn’t break.
The Liahona was originally given to Lehi, who is a prophet of God, his son Nephi became a prophet also and used the Liahona on his travels from Jerusalem to America. He traveled with the brass plates which were a history of his ancestors and they used the Liahona to guide them across the ocean.
I recommend using a silk gold PLA filament for printing the Liahona. It takes about 4 hours to print. I would also print two top pieces at a time, if you do this the point on the top will have time to cool between layers and look a lot better.
The holes for the hinges are 2.25 mm which will fit the 1.75 filament. Just cut a piece of your filament and insert it into your hinge. I use my 3D pen to melt the end of the filament slightly so it won't come out. If you glue it you could run into problems with the hinges breaking.
You can print the trinkets in any color you like or paint them.
Measurements are approximately 2 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches tall. Print as many as you like.
We don't really know what the real Liahona looked like, just a description in the Book of Mormon, it’s found in 1 Nephi16:9-10. Part of it reads “a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness” I used this and various pictures to come up with my own design. My daughter gave me the idea to make this and put a real compass inside. I hope you enjoy printing this file and have fun using this while teaching about the story of Nephi.
Note: You will need to order the compass and stickers for Nephi separately so you can complete this set. Search my other listings for “Liahona inserts”
